Need to connect to the internet on one of your devices? Did you know you can use your smartphone to do so? If you have a Samsung, here are all the steps you need to follow to use your phone as a router. If you have an iPhone, check out this article!

Why use connection sharing?

Connection sharing is useful in various situations:

  • You do not have a Wi-Fi connection available for your computer or tablet.

  • You need a stable Internet connection when travelling.

  • You want to share your mobile data plan with other devices.

Before you begin

Check your mobile plan: Make sure your operator allows connection sharing and that you have sufficient mobile data.

Battery: A shared connection consumes a lot of power. It is best to connect your smartphone to a power source while using it.

How to enable connection sharing

Option 1: Wi-Fi tethering

  • Go to Settings: Open the Settings app on your smartphone.

  • Navigate to Connections: Tap "Connections," then tap "Mobile hotspot and modem."

  • Enable mobile hotspot: Slide the button next to 'Mobile hotspot' to enable it.

  • Configure hotspot settings: Tap 'Configure' to change the network name (SSID) and password.

  • Connect your devices: On the other device (computer, tablet, etc.), enable Wi-Fi, search for your network name, and enter the password.

Option 2: Connection sharing via USB

  • Connect your smartphone to a computer: Use a USB cable.

  • Enable USB sharing: In Settings, go to "Connections" > "Mobile hotspot and modem". Enable "USB modem".

  • Use the connection on your PC: The computer should automatically detect the connection and access the Internet.

Option 3: Bluetooth tethering

  • Enable Bluetooth on both devices: On the Samsung smartphone, enable Bluetooth in Settings.

  • Do the same on the other device.

  • Pair both devices: Ensure that the smartphone and the other device are paired.

  • Enable Bluetooth sharing: Go to "Connections" > "Mobile hotspot and modem", then enable "Bluetooth modem".

  • Configure the connection on the other device: Configure the device to use the Internet connection via Bluetooth.

Optimise and secure your connection sharing

  • Monitor your data usage: Tethering can quickly use up your data allowance.

  • Turn off sharing when you're done: To save battery and data, turn off the mobile hotspot once you no longer need it.

  • Secure your connection: Use a strong password to prevent unauthorised connections.
