Is your iPhone no longer picking up your voice properly? Is the sound faulty during calls or videos? This is most likely a microphone issue. Here are a few tips to help you identify the source of the problem and fix it.

Test the iPhone's microphones

Please note that iPhones have several microphones. You must therefore first determine which microphone is affected by a malfunction.

The main microphone, usually located at the bottom of your iPhone next to the charging port, can be tested very easily:

  • Simply launch the "Dictaphone" app and make a recording by speaking clearly into the microphone.
  • Once the recording is complete, listen to it.
    • If the sound is weak or your voice is inaudible, this indicates that the problem is probably with this microphone.
    • On the other hand, if the recording is clear, you can rule out this microphone as the source of the problem.

The front microphone, located on the front of your iPhone, may also be causing the malfunction. To test it, you will need another phone:

  • Make a regular call or FaceTime call from your iPhone to this second phone.
  • Speak normally into your iPhone, then listen to your voice on the other device.
    • If you can be heard clearly, the problem is not with this microphone.
    • If your voice is difficult to hear, try cleaning the microphone with compressed air. After that, make another call to check if the problem persists. Be careful not to blow on it yourself! Your own breath contains saliva particles that can moisten the internal parts and damage them.

Finally, the rear microphone on your iPhone could also be the cause. To test it:

  • Start recording a video while speaking.
  • Once the recording is complete, play it back.
    • If the microphone is working properly, Siri should detect the sound from the recording.
    • If this is not the case, the microphone may be blocked or damaged.

How to repair the microphone?

Once you have identified the microphone in question, here is what you can do:

  • For the accessible part, clean the grille with a dry cloth (no water or cleaning products).
  • Ensure that iOS is up to date.
  • Ensure that the settings are configured to allow the use of the microphone. Check these settings in apps that use the microphone: phone, camera, Siri, and any other app that requires the use of the microphone.
  • Reset your iPhone settings to default.
  • Restore your iPhone. Please note: do not forget to back up your data and content first!

If, despite all these checks and adjustments, the microphone in question still does not work, it means that the part is no longer functioning. Simply replace it to solve the problem.

Special case: iPhone 7 series

Do you own an iPhone 7 series? Be aware that a design flaw has been identified in this series. The microcontroller tends to come unsoldered and therefore stops working after a certain amount of time.

The only way to fix it is with micro-soldering.
