Resetting your iPhone may be necessary for various reasons: selling or giving away your device, resolving technical issues, or deleting all your data for a fresh start.

Follow the steps below to safely reset your iPhone.

Before you begin: back up your data and content!

Back up your data: Before resetting your iPhone, make sure you have backed up all your important data. You can use iCloud or iTunes for this.

With iCloud:

  • Go to Settings > General > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  • Tap Back Up Now.

With iTunes/Finder:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  • Open iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina and later).
  • Click Back Up Now.
  • Disable the 'Find My iPhone' feature:
  • Go to Settings > [Votre nom] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
  • Turn off this option and enter your Apple ID password.

Check your Apple ID information:

Make a note of your Apple ID credentials and passwords so you can reactivate the device after resetting it.

Steps to reset your iPhone

1. Resetting from the iPhone settings

This is the quickest and easiest method. However, it requires that your iPhone is functioning so that you can access the settings.

Access the settings:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Go to 'General': scroll down and tap General.
  • Select "Transfer or Reset iPhone": tap this option, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Confirm your choice: you will need to enter your passcode and Apple ID password to confirm.
  • Wait: your iPhone will restart and proceed to delete all data. This process may take several minutes.

2. Resetting via a computer

If your iPhone is not responding or you prefer to use a computer, this method is ideal.

  • Connect your iPhone to a computer: use a Lightning cable to connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC.
  • Open iTunes or Finder: on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, use Finder.
  • On an older Mac or PC, use iTunes.
  • Put the iPhone into recovery mode (if necessary): for iPhone 8 and later models, briefly press the volume up button, then the volume down button. Then hold the side button until the recovery mode screen appears.
  • Select 'Restore iPhone': once the iPhone is detected, click Restore iPhone.
  • Follow the instructions to download and install the software.

What to do after resetting?

Set up your iPhone: When your iPhone restarts, follow the steps on the screen to set up your device.

Restore your data: if you have backed up your data, you can restore it from iCloud or iTunes.

Check that everything is working: ensure that your applications, contacts, and settings have been restored.
