It is not complicated to switch off an iPhone, but certain bugs may prevent you from using the basic technique. Furthermore, the steps differ depending on the model. So here are all the techniques for switching off your iPhone, depending on the model!

Why turn off your iPhone?

There are several reasons why it may be useful to switch off your iPhone:

To save battery life: If you do not plan to use it for a while.

To resolve bugs: Restarting a device can resolve many minor issues.

As a precaution: To prevent accidental use of your iPhone and preserve battery life.

The different ways to switch off your iPhone

1. For recent models (iPhone X and later)

iPhones with Face ID (without a home button) have a different method for turning off:

  • Press the side button (power button) and one of the volume buttons (up or down) simultaneously.
  • Hold these buttons down until the screen displays the "Power Off" option.
  • Slide the "Power Off" slider to the right to turn off your iPhone.

2. For models with a home button (iPhone 8 and earlier)

If your iPhone has a home button, the procedure is simpler:

  • Press and hold the side button (or top button for older models).
  • Wait for the "Power Off" slider to appear on the screen.
  • Slide the slider to turn off the device.

3. Switching off via settings

Since iOS 11, Apple has added an option to turn off the iPhone directly via settings:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Navigate to General.
  • Scroll down to the "Power Off" option and tap it.
  • Slide the slider to turn off the device.

This method is particularly useful if one of the physical buttons on your iPhone is damaged.

What to do if your iPhone is unresponsive?

If your iPhone is unresponsive and you cannot turn it off in the usual way, you can force a restart. Please note that this procedure, also known as a "soft reset", restarts the device but does not turn it off. This procedure has no impact on the content of your iPhone.

For iPhone X and later models:

Briefly press the volume up button, then the volume down button.

Hold down the side button until the screen turns off and the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus:

Press and hold the side button and volume down button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 6s and earlier models:

Press and hold the Home button and the side or top button simultaneously until the device restarts.
