Adding a second screen or "monitor" to your Mac can be a great way to improve your productivity or enjoy a more immersive multimedia experience. Here's how to connect and set up an additional screen on your Mac.

Check the ports on your Mac

Before you begin, identify the ports available on your Mac. Recent models are often equipped with USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. Older models may have HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, or VGA ports.

Common ports on Macs:

  • USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 or 4

  • HDMI

  • Mini DisplayPort

If your display uses a different port than the one available on your Mac, you may need an adapter.

Connect the second display

Plug the monitor into the mains and then connect it to your Mac using a compatible cable or adapter if necessary.

The window below will appear to display the monitor (screen) you have just connected.

If the window does not appear, go to Settings: select the Apple menu > System Settings, then click Monitors in the sidebar to display your monitor settings.

If it does not appear, hold down the "option" button to display the monitor in the window.

Once you have selected the monitor, you can adjust settings such as resolution, brightness and colour profile.

Configure the displays

Once the second screen is connected, you will have various configuration options:

  • Drag the screen icons to adjust their layout.

  • Place the main screen by dragging the menu bar (white line) to the desired screen.

Several display modes are also available:

  • Extend display: Allows you to use both screens as a single surface.

  • Mirror mode: Displays the same image on both screens.
